ALICE IN WONDERLAND Box Office: 45M Friday; AVATAR No Longer Top Five
Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton‘s revamping of Lewis Carroll‘s fantasy, has decimated the competition at the Friday box office, reports Nikki Finke at Deadline.com. the film grossed an estimated $45 million on Friday, a staggering amount that easily beat Avatar‘s opening day take (which was affected by a winter storm that covered much of the Eastern US).
Finke estimates that Alice in Wonderland may gross between $115-$120 million over the weekend — vs. Avatar‘s $77 million — which would make it both the biggest March release and the biggest 3D debut ever. To date (not adjusted for inflation), the best opening weekend at the North American box office belongs to Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Batman and the then recently deceased Heath Ledger as the Joker. the blockbuster earned $158m on its first weekend in mid-2008.
Alice in Wonderland, which has received mixed reviews, stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and the voice of Stephen Fry.
At a (very) distant second, Antoine Fuqua‘s cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest took in an estimated $5.2 million Friday for a possible weekend total of $14.5 million at 1,936 screens. not a terribly impressive debut, but not a disappointing figure, either. Brooklyn’s Finest stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke.
As expected, James Cameron‘s Avatar dropped out of the top-five on Friday, ranking at #7 with only $1.3 million, right behind Garry Marshall‘s all-star romantic comedy Valentine’s Day. Avatar, however, is expected to end the weekend at #6 with $5.5 million — as long as past Saturday surges take place once again later today.
Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, was #3 with an estimated $4 million and an estimated $13.5 million for the weekend. Martin Scorsese‘s thriller was followed by Kevin Smith‘s comedy Cop Out with $3 million and $9.5 million for the weekend. The Crazies was next with $2.5 million and an estimated weekend gross of $7.5 million.
Addendum: Those were early estimates published at Deadline.com late Friday night. More accurate estimates will be posted here on Saturday.

Despite the bad reviews, Alice in Wonderland is doing incredible business. I wonder if Tron Legacy will post an even higher 3D opening in December.

Wrong information. Avatar was #6, AHEAD of Valentine’s day, grossing an approximate $1.975 million. I wish people would do their homework BEFORE they write an article!!

The homework WAS done. Those were early estimates. this article was posted last night.
But I should have made it clear that more accurate estimates would be made available on Sat morning/early afternoon.
Those will be posted shortly.
And I’ll amend the article now.

Valentine's Day | ph-balanced
This Valentine’s Day we decided to stay overnight in Seattle at the Inn at the Market which is located down by the waterfront next to Pike’s place Market. We booked a water view room and it was fantastic! Paul took this photo in the morning as the ferry sailed past. Our view of the Puget Sound was amazing. We even enjoyed some yummy chocolate covered strawberries. They were huge and about the best thing I have had in a while since we started eating healthier.
Paul then surprised me with tickets to go see the musical Annie at the Paramount. He pays attention as I have mentioned in the past (numerous times I’m sure) that I love musicals. We had great seats on Valentine’s evening and the cast was outstanding (thanks my love!).
Manning man sought in Orangeburg Valentine’s Day stabbings
Police are looking for a Hampton man they allege stabbed four people at a Valentine’s Day party for no obvious reason.
Warrants have been obtained against 21-year-old Donte Jaquire Brunson of 103 White Pine St., who police claim grabbed a woman’s buttocks at an Orangeburg party early Sunday before stabbing her and three others.
“Do not try to approach him,” said Capt. Mike Adams of the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety. “This individual is a known gang member. the subject should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.”
Brunson is wanted by police on three charges of assault and battery with intent to kill and one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the stabbings.
A 21-year-old man at the Buckley Street party was airlifted to a Columbia hospital where he spent five days after suffering 27 stab wounds, according to the man’s father.
“He’s out of the hospital, they’ve released him,” the man’s father said Friday. “He’s resting right now.”
Another man, 21, was stabbed in the back and chest, that wound puncturing his lung. he was taken to the Regional Medical Center where he was later listed as stable, officials said.
A third man, 19, was stabbed in the leg. he was treated and released from the RMC.
Only later did police learn there had been a fourth victim who kept her injury from authorities.
“During the course of the investigation, we discovered a female had been stabbed in the buttocks,” Adams said.
The woman was approached by a male at the party at around 1:15 a.m., according to a warrant. the woman said the man groped her.
“Victim confronted defendant and that is when he pulled out a pocket knife and poked victim in her butt cheek,” the warrant states.
Warrants allege that about 12 minutes later, the man with the knife “asked (the) victim if he had a problem, then jumped on victim, stabbing him 27 times.”
Officials claim the other two men were also stabbed during this same altercation.
The father of the man stabbed 27 times has said his son was an innocent bystander in the confrontation.
Investigators say they are still trying to determine what sparked the altercation. they currently believe it was unprovoked.
However, the man’s father thinks the three men were attacked because they are in the military.
The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office has been searching for Brunson since Thursday.
Adams said Brunson has contacted Orangeburg authorities on at least one occasion to ask what the charges against him would be.
“But he still refuses to turn himself in,” Adams said.
Adams said Brunson has been on probation for distribution of cocaine since September.
In 2006, he was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. that case is still pending, according to Hampton County records.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Brunson is asked to contact the ODPS at 803-534-2812 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC. A reward may be available.

MOVIE REVIEW: Valentine's Day: Less would have been more
MOVIE REVIEW: Valentine’s Day: Less would have been more
by Mathew DeKinderTuesday, February 16, 2010 7:09 PM CST
Have you ever taken on an entire box of Valentine’s candy? Amidst the gorging, you’ll likely encounter a wide array of chocolates, each with varied degrees of satisfaction and none really all that impressive.about halfway through you’ll realize as waves of nausea begin to creep in that you probably would have been better off just eating a Snickers bar and going about your day.this is probably the best way to describe the movie “Valentine’s Day.” this romantic comedy tries to cram a bouquet of headlining actors into one single box, giving each an abbreviated storyline that goes down about as well as all that coconut, toffee and nougat.I could try to regurgitate the laundry list of featured stars that are as varied as Jamie Foxx, Shirley McClaine, Patrick Dempsey and Julia Roberts, but instead I think it might just be easier to tell you who’s not in the movie: Dabney Coleman, the cast of “The Jeffersons” and all the Baldwin brothers. The gist of the movie is that we encounter various tales of romance in Los Angeles during, as the title would suggest, Valentine’s Day. The focal point of the movie is Ashton Kutcher, which is kind of like the main support beam of the Eiffel Tower being made out of balsa wood.
Photo Galleries | Prep Sports Photos
Kutcher plays a love-struck florist whom nearly all the characters encounter during the course of the day as plot lines cross and then crisscross back again.”Valentine’s Day” will remind many people of the vastly superior “Love, actually,” which is essentially the same movie only with a parade of British stars and the holiday setting of Christmas. The reason “Love, Actually” soared while “Valentine’s Day” stumbles is that it took on roughly four fewer storylines and took a much more nuanced and mature look at the power of love than it’s bubbly, sugar-coated, American counterpart.we bounce from story to story as the “Romantic Conflict and Resolution” playbook is emptied and just when we find ourselves even with the slightest inkling of interest in a character, we are whisked off to another equally contrived situation and forced to start from scratch.Once the novelty of celebrity spotting wears off, it’s hard to muster up the energy to care about another group of characters and their condensed-for-the-sake-of-time problems.”Valentine’s Day” is directed by Garry Marshall, who frankly should know better. Aside from Robert Altman, no director has really mastered the art of handling a sprawling cast and Marshall is no exception.Altman understood that if you’re going to pull this trick off you need to be nimble and maintain a good flow, so the audience feels as if it is making its way through a really good cocktail party. After watching “Valentine’s Day,” the audience feels more like it’s been speed dating with mescaline addicts.Aside from the most die-hard fans of the romantic comedy genre who don’t mind being run through the Hollywood gauntlet of familiarity and conventionality in the name of love, most will find “Valentine’s Day” to be disappointing at best and grueling at worst.this year for Valentine’s Day why not just stay home and rent “Love, actually,” instead. It’s a heck of a lot cheaper and your date will thank you for it. just be sure you take it easy on the candy.”Valentine’s Day” is rated PG-13 for some sexual material and brief partial nudity.

Valentine's Day Gaming Round-up
Say what you want about Valentine’s Day (or Singles’ Awareness Day, if you prefer), we’ll take any excuse we can get to celebrate video games and video game culture. usually, that turns out to be a handful of fan-made video game Valentines cards or a recurring special event in a massively multiplayer online game — but it seems to us that there’s more going on than ever before this year for Valentine’s Day 2010. probably because it falls on a weekend.
Online Events:
You can count on just about every MMO out there to offer some kind of Valentine’s Day event, quests or items, so we just went with a few of the big ones.
World of Warcraft is hosting a revamped version of last year’s Love is in the Air Event with special quests and items.
Final Fantasy XI has a Valentine’s Day event already in progress that concludes Feb. 15.
Aion: the Tower of Eternity is hosting a double experience points weekend in honor of V-Day and has special true Love and Chocolate Valentine Packs up for grabs.
Gears of War 2 is also offering double XP this weekend, plus double points for reviving a buddy. how sweet!
Demon’s Souls is offering both White “Loves-Me” World Tendency and Black “Loves-Me-Not” Tendency for the weekend. Based on a too-close community vote, the White Tendency will only last ’til Feb. 16 and then go Black for the rest of the month.
ANKAMA is throwing a special Valentine’s Day event in the online world of DOFUS 2.0 where you massacre over-sexed Gobballs.
Sony Online Entertainment spreads the love this Valentine’s Day with in-game celebrations in EverQuest, EverQuest II, Free Realms, Legends of Norrath, and Star Wars Galaxies — check out each game for details.
Dungeon Fighter Online also added some new content to its lineup in honor of Valentine’s Day involving a Valentine’s Day Box fetch quest that’s probably not unlike a real life fetch quest for the perfect box of chocolates.
PlayStation Home’s V-Day blowout. Seriously, there is so much going on here, we can’t even sort it all out from the Mardi Gras celebration stuff.
Freebies and Sales:
The iPhone is where it’s at for game freebies and sales. Make sure you scan the App Store this weekend for way more of them than we could list here.
Namco is having a Valentine’s Day sale of up to 50% from Feb. 10 through Feb. 15 on 20 iPhone games and various PC games.
Get iPhone Breast Cancer Charity game, Bliss, for free V-Day weekend. For every Pink Ribbon code you win in-game, developer Mobile Deluxe donates $.05 to the beautiful Day Foundation.
Happy Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend, everybody!
Anti-V-Day never sounded sweeter
With Valentine’s Day coming, love is in the air. while walking on campus, many of us are swarmed with floating hearts and V-Day reservation phone calls; it could make a single person or a V-Day hater toss his or her cookies.
Valentine’s Day. YUCK.
Music on the radio is also all lovey-dovey; every channel you turn to, Celine Dion or Barry White fill our heads. so, why not hop onto a computer, download some anti-love songs, and have yourself an anti-Valentine’s Day listening party? Here is a list to get you started.
• Lucie Silvas “What You’re Made of” Breakup anthem about a one-sided relationship and telling the person to buzz-off. Send this song to the person who does not love you back.
• Zee Avi “I Am me once More” Jazzy tune by an up-and-coming artist, Avi proudly sings about a relationship that changed her for the worse, but since the breakup, she is finally able to be herself again.
• Maria Mena “Just Hold Me” A relationship on the rocks is the main theme of Mena’s heart wrenching tune. As Mena sings, “Do you like to see me broken? why do I still care,” many of us can relate to the lyrics about still yearning for those jerks who broke our hearts.
• Apocalyptica featuring Adam Gontier “I Don’t Care” The words, “If you’re dead or still alive, I don’t care” speak volumes while listening to this song. can you say, “Bitter breakup?”
• Linkin Park “P5hng me A_wy” this song-featured on LP’s “Reanimation” album-has overtones of falseness in a relationship and how lies consume the individuals involved.
• Trish Thuy Trang “Too Little, too Late” For all those women scorned, this is a great anthem to get up and dance to. Who knew that breaking up could be fun?
• Diana Ross and the Supremes “You Keep me Hanging On” another song about one-sided love where one person who does not love keeps toying with the other person’s emotions. Who needs someone like that? “Set me free why don’t ya, babe.” this song was recently featured on Fox’s “Glee,” a television show about a high school Glee Club.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Looks like Digg found a copy of the Tetris valentine I’ve been hosting on my server since February 2006. The original was created by Mitch at the wonderful 4 Color Rebellion gaming blog, but when I tried to redirect the requests to their original entry, the traffic shut down their server in a few minutes.
So if you’re looking for the valentine, here it is. Click it to see a full-size, print-quality version on 4 Color Rebellion’s site, and see their other 2006 Geek Valentines.
And if you like those, don’t miss 4 Color Rebellion’s geek valentines for last year and this year! In 2007, they made adorable Phoenix Wright, Nintendo DS, Wii, and Metroid Prime valentines. This year, it’s a set of valentines for Dr. Mario, Mario Galaxy, and Wii.
In case you’re 14 years old, relatively new to the Internet, and/or coming from Digg, here are a bunch of other two-year-old links you might have missed: Halo Babies, Ze Frank’s On Valentine’s Day, A Very Star Wars Valentines, All Your Heart Candy Are Belong to Us, a set of vintage 1980s Valentines including Mario, Zelda, and TMNT, vector art of Ralph Wiggum’s valentines, more original Nintendo valentines, and nothing woos a lady like romantic Perl poetry. want something more fresh? New this year are the Team Fortress 2 valentines, Ironic Sans’ Scientist Valentines, Jacks of Science’s Science Valentines, Diesel Sweeties’ E-Cards 2.0, a DIY pulsating LED heart card, interlocking Moebius strip hearts, and Woot’s superhero comic anti-valentines.
